We do a limited amount of book rebinding.
We are NOT trained in conservation but we can often repair a book structurally and make a NEW cover for the pages so that it will stay together and last for many more years.
We do NOT do things like repairing torn pages with tissue, and we do not do projects that require salvaging an old rotten leather cover. What we CAN sometimes do (depending on the condition of the book pages) is make a NEW cover for old pages.
For restoration work, you need to contact a conservation binder and we can provide you with a list of binders who are trained conservationist (none are located in the Champaign-Urbana area).
We MUST see the book IN PERSON to determine if we can work on it, what we can do for it, and how much we will charge. If you are out of town, you can email us photos of the book in question. That might help us determine if we cannot work on it, but we will still need to see the book in person (whether you bring it in or ship it to us) in order to make a final determination.
Books may be rejected for several reasons including:
- an excessive number of dog-eared pages
- the use of tape anywhere in the book
- wrinkled pages
- past incorrect repairs
- past use of improper glue on a book
- fragile paper with a high acid content
- a severe reverse-curve in the spine
- water damage
- mold damage
Rebinding is priced by estimate only and typically ranges from $100 - $500.
